Song about an old warrior that as he sits elderly and alone, body broken, contemplating his quickly approaching death reminisces on the glory of the battlefield. The fetid copper-tinged air burning like a wildfire in his nostrils. A fire that reaches molten fingers down into the primal base of his being up and unlocks the savage, primeval nature we keep caged within. A warm mist of crimson droplets trailing each powerful arc of his blade as he wades through a seething mass of steel, flesh, and fear. Unmatched and unbested in battle his name, and the name of his blade, became legend. And now he waits for the final breath, forgotten but for the stories in songs that the drunkards and peasants sing around the fire, he wishes for nothing but one last chance to lift that blade and find death behind it.
lyrics
The breaths they don’t come easy, the years they weigh me down.
No battle left to die in, no seed remains to sow.
There’s no time left for waiting, nothing left to show.
Every breath I take is baited, every step has turned to stone.
I wonder if you know...
My bones are weak and weary, I can hear the reaper call.
When will they send the roses, when it’s time for me to go.
I wonder if you know...
My heart pumps for no reason, the sun hangs red and low,
A turning of the season, this winter of my soul.
Give me one more mountain, beyond which I cannot know.
I can see my death is coming, and I’m stuck at the crossroads.
Stuck at the crossroads...
One more line to charge on
One more call to war
One more cut to suffer
One more mile to go
One more blade to shatter
One more bloody foe
One more chance at glory
One more plate of crow
The watcher in the darkness
The hunter in the snow
The pilgrim at the temple
The runner all alone
