This is about the Civil War battle of Antietam. The single bloodiest day in US military history and, more specifically, the stand, and slaughter, of General Thomas Meagher's Irish Brigade (1st Div., 2nd Corps, Army of the Potomac - that's the Union Army) at "Sunken Road", aka "Bloody Lane".
Why? Because we're giant nerds.
lyrics
No glory found in their grave
All heaven cries for the broken
No march home for the unlucky brave
A crime that goes unspoken
Absolution was offered
Before they come to the slaughter
Down in the sunken road
The furnace roar and musket smoke
Hold that line alone
Flesh and blood, mud and bone.
Beneath the midday sun
Road ran red with their blood
When the day was done
Five-thousand men kingdom come
Ghosts of Sunken Road
On moonless nights they walk alone
Ghosts of Sunken Road
Only shadows remain and tears cry on
…Ghosts of Sunken Road
Years have come and gone away
Memories of names forgotten
Nothing gained from the slaughter
And on moonless nights they say
You can hear their voices still calling
Forever trapped in the slaughter
Down in the sunken road
The hoof-beats drum, and the dead march on
Hold that line alone
Cannons bark, and the reaper comes, aww yeah
Ghosts of Sunken Road
On moonless nights they walk alone
Ghosts of Sunken Road
Only shadows remain and tears cry on
…Ghosts of Sunken Road
Absolution was offered
Before they came to the…
Nothing gained from the…
Forever trapped in the slaughter
